Cold Chain Shipper Design

GCCS design packaging for temperature-sensitive products, specifically to meet the client's requirements.
The shippers are designed to meet transport ambient temperatures from -20°C to +60°C, and transport times from 24 to 144 hours.

Specific packing configurations can be designed to cater for multiple product temperatures within the shipper.
i.e. the same shipper can be used for +2°C to +8°C or +20°C to +24°C (platelets), and +10°C to +25°C (controlled ambient)
or -21°C.

Designs can incorporate flat-pack, semi reusable or disposable solutions.
Flat-pack solutions can minimise inbound freight costs.

Key Features include the following:

  • Standard single packing configuration for all shippers
  • Suitable for both summer & winter profiles
  • Suitable for all transport methods
  • Accommodates all t emperature r anges
  • Comprehensive validation testing
  • Summer & winter profiles and international profiles
  • Gel Bricks for +2°C to +8°C, +10°C to +24°C,
    +20°C to +24°C, < -21°C and < -26°C

GCCS rigourously test the shippers to the most stringent standards, the shippers are tested
to meet worst-case conditions.

Types of Packaging:

Made to order with customised sizes gain efficiency and reduce freight costs.

  • Courier Boxes  (small shipper)
  • Re-usable Shippers (reverse logistics)
  • Pallet Shippers (large export shipments)

Cold Chain Auditing

GCCS staff have a vast knowledge and experience of all the variables that impact a temperature-sensitive supply chain.
Their services have been utilised by many of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies.

In addition, GCCS conduct on-site audits and reviews of a client's cold chain. This involves a comprehensive analysis
of the whole distribution chain current methods, operational processes and other key elements to establish
a base line and to identify risks, potential areas for improvement and cost reductions.

Transit Profiling

Our approach is to transit profile the client's distribution model
and design and validate a shipper to meet the specific purpose.

Types of Profiles:

  • USA domestic summer and winter 24hr, 48hr, 72hr
  • Europe Winter > Australian Summer
  • Australia Winter > Europe Summer (via Singapore/Dubai)
  • Europe Summer > USA/Canada Winter

The GCCS profiling methodology provides a platform for all temperature-sensitive shipments,
qualification planning and auditing. The methods employed and documentation created provides
a solid platform with justification and rationale which will withstand a high level of auditing.

Refer to our Chamber Testing page for more detailed information.

Cold Chain Testing

GCCS has a large testing facility for temperature-testing cold chain shippers and components.
We offer fixed temperature or stepped multi-temperature testing comprising up to 50 time
and temperature segments. Chamber testing is available from -20°C to +60°C.

We conduct all types of validation and temperature testing, and operational qualification testing.
GCCS develop specific qualification protocols for clients based on their temperature-sensitive
requirements.
We test the shippers in our environmental chambers to confirm they meet the
validation protocol and provide reports containing 3 shipper tests, for each profile.

All testing is conducted with NATA certified equipment.

Types of Validation:

  • Frozen- Dry Ice - 80ºC (-112ºF)
  • Frozen <- 26ºC (< -3ºF)
  • Frozen < -20ºC (< -4ºF)
  • Food +1ºC to +5ºC (+33ºF to +41ºF)
  • Pharmaceutical +2ºC to +8ºC (+35ºF to +46ºF)
  • Blood +2ºC to +6ºC (+35ºF to +42ºF)
  • Ambient +10ºC to +25ºC (+50ºF to +77ºF)
  • Platelets +20ºC to +24ºC (+68ºF to +77ºF)
Many of our validations comprise single packing configurations which suit both summer
and winter transit profiles. With a single packing configuration, a company has an immediate

reduction in risk, improved packing time and reduction in labour costs.

Training

Adequate cold chain knowledge is critical to the overall success of a validated temperature-sensitive supply chain.
Due to the specialised nature of cold chain, training should form an integral part of an organisation's overall plan.

Global Cold Chain can offer comprehesive cold chain training addressing all aspects and variables that will critically
impact the complex process of distributing temperature-sensitive products. The comprehensive training includes

temperature monitoring and measurement, different approaches to qualification, Indentifying potential risks, managing
risk, transit profiling, packaging , transport and improving cost and efficiencies.

Types of Training:

Cold chain training is provided at all levels, from Senior Management involved in the planning processes,
to Logistics and Warehouse employees who manage the operational and distribution process.
For example
  • Logistics managers
  • Quality assurance associates
  • Validation managers
  • Cold chain managers
  • Warehouse and distribution employees
  • 3PL providers

Conference & Keynote Presentations

As a global leader in cold chain, GCCS are frequently invited to speak at seminars and cold chain events in Australia and internationally.

Warehouse & Cold Room Mapping

GCCS undertake mapping validation studies of both small and large-scale cool room and warehousing facilities.
to determine the worst-case locations for installation of temperature monitoring equipment in future.

The mapping validation is effectively a heat distribution study, investigating whether required temperatures have
been attained throughout the storage areas.

Types of Facilities:

  • Pharmaceutical Cool Rooms and warehousing facilities
  • Transport and Logistics warehousing
  • Cold Storage & transport vehicles
  • Fresh Product/Perishables storage

Data Logger Calibration

GCCS regularly service and complete traceable NATA and workshop calibrations for a number of pharmaceutical, logistics
government, military and food service companies. The pre-NATA calibration service is a critical step that is conducted
in-house at GCCS’ Tullamarine premises.

GCCS utilise the manufacturer’s software program to fully function test the electronics and components of the
data logger and
firmware (internal software) . This cannot be undertaken at the laboratory.

The following important steps are carried out prior to completing in-house workshop
calibration, or Traceable full NATA calibration:
